  1. Great location - organisers struggled with the timings & results

This review was submitted for Half Triathlon Pamplona - Iruña 2022 - Open Race

Year of participation: 2022   I participated in Aquabike

Hope this isn’t considered too long for a race review…
The Pamplona Half on Saturday 14 May(middle distance triathlon & aquabike) was host to the Spanish Middle Distance championships and as such, I was only able to compete in the Open race.

The venue for the swim is located to the SW of Pamplona at Embalse de Alloz and T2 in Pamplona itself. A beautiful location and a popular event with 1500 athletes at the start. A clean, clear lake and simple 1 loop course looked straight forward enough, the water 17°C so wetsuits allowed tho’ not mandatory. However, the start was designated a ‘Rolling’ start with Elites leading the way, followed by AG triathletes, Open triathletes, AG Aquabike, Open Aquabike and relay teams. The way the organisers did this was to have everyone stand by their bikes in T1 ready to swim and move forward in single file to the waters edge some 500m away down a steep slipway. My race number was 1469 and was literally the last person to leave transition after standing waiting for almost half an hour after the 1st Elite male had entered the water, in strong sunshine (luckily, the temp never attained the 29°C forecast but, all the same !) After a bit of zigging and zagging through the back of the field, the swim finished with a steep climb back to T1.

A fantastic bike route, well marshalled and of varied terrain, the route progressed towards Pamplona with great scenery and some testing climbs, particularly on some of the minor roads into Pamplona itself. Again, for me starting at the back of the field, there was a lot of overtaking to be done but I encountered very few groups on the ride. Pamplona is a fantastic city to visit and the triathlon finished in the very heart of town, using some of the (in)famous bull running streets for the run to the finish.

Plenty of food and drink in the athletes reception after the finish line but confusion ensued with timings and placings – I wasn’t able to see my results until Monday afternoon, the race having taken place on Saturday and the organisers provided no explanation to the lack of the classifications. Still, at least I got some results as many triathletes were marked down as DNS or DNF ! I hope the organisers learn from these ‘glitches’ and raise their game as it would be a pity to boycott such a marvellous location for a race ! A rating of 2.5 stars reflects these faults…

  2. Half Triathlon Pamplona - Iruña 2025 - European Aquabike Championships Race Review

This review was submitted for Half Triathlon Pamplona - Iruña 2025 - European Aquabike Championships

Year of participation: 2025   I participated in Aquabike

Organisation: two out of three questions not answered. Had to wait 45min in the sun in transition for my start
Swim: space between buoy one and two too far. Nice lake swim
Bike: starting order again ridicolous (Aquabiker right behind all triathletes, even the open race). I had to pass hundreds of cyclists, often blocking the road in big groups while traffic was allowed. Highly dangerous!
    The course itself was beautiful.
Finishline: none for Aquabike. We were not even mentioned. Lots of athletes didn’t even rack there bikes but left them at the recovery area and no one of the organisation cared. Plenty of food. Unfortunately unhealthy Coka Cola instead of e.g. juices.
The location for the finish in the heart of Pamplona was great. It would have been even greater to let aquabikers walk to the finish line at Plaza del Castillo for there own finish line experience.

  3. Half Triathlon Pamplona - Iruña 2025 - European Aquabike Championships Race Review

This review was submitted for Half Triathlon Pamplona - Iruña 2025 - European Aquabike Championships

Year of participation: 2025   I participated in Aquabike

Start was not well organised, standing in the midday sun in a wetsuit for a prolonged period, followed by a rolling start not a wave start as advertised. Lovely water but sighting on the two long legs difficult, more buoys needed. T1 in a crowded tent was a shambles, why could we not change by our bikes ? Testing bike course but generally very good quality roads and traffic control. Hard to manage drafting early in the ride due to number of riders on the road but the field did spread out well quite well. The last few miles of the ride up through a small village on terrible roads were not nice, but the final run into Pamplona with a good climb and a sprint finish were great. But what a dismal finish experience once you crossed the line !
Some areas for improvement, but I really enjoyed the event and the city.
