After the latest statement which followed the PTO’s premature announcement for the 2024 European Championships, Europe Triathlon kept their word to announce date and location for the 2024 European Multisport Championships a week later. They will be held on the 23rd of June in Coimbra, Portugal.

Race organizer multisport.pt is organizing the Coimbra Multisport Weekend since 2021, including aquabike races from the very beginning. In 2023 the event hosted aquabike races over three different distances from Standard Distance to Full Distance. I did not yet receive any information if there will be races over other distances as well at the 2024 event besides the European Championships which are held over the middle distance. We also do net yet have a confirmation if the bike course will be the same as at the Multisport Weekend. But since the race already took place on closed roads in the previous years, it seems likely that there won´t be massive changes to the bike course, which is perfectly described with two words: flat and fast. Main part of the bike course are long straight roads alongside the Rio Mondego, the river which is also hosting the swim part of the race.

It came as a bit of a surprise that only a few days after the announcement of the 2024 European’s, the location for the 2025 Championships were also published on some Spanish Sports Media Websites. Although there is no official statement from Europe Triathlon for 2025 yet, it seems that the European Championships in that year will be held in Pamplona.

The event hosted the Spanish Aquabike Championships over the Middle Distance in 2022 and 2023 and will also do so in 2024 before stepping up the European stage in 2025. The reviews that we have from the 2022 race implicate some space for improvements for the race organization. However, I haven´t heard much about the race this year, which should be a good sign. However, over the last two years it was a point-to-point race with the swim taking place in Pantano de Alloz, quite outside of Pamplona. I´m not sure if this will be sanctioned by Europe Triathlon – so I´m expecting some changes here. Also the date seems to be not settled yet. In previous years the race took place in mid-May. Since we also do not yet have a date for the 2025 Long Distance World Championships which will be held to too far away in Pontevedra, the organizers might wait for this event’s date before setting a date for the European Championships. But there is plenty of time until then and it´s certainly good news that we already have a location for 2025.
