This week the organizer of the 2024 Long Distance World Championships in Townsville, Australia released the course details for all the races at the multisport event. The first look at the page for the aquabike race might give a slightly misleading impression though.
But before the good swimmers get a bit too excited: No, the bike leg is not only 30 km. And no, the picture with a bunch of cyclists does not mean that the race will be draft legal.
After the latest statement which followed the PTO’s premature announcement for the 2024 European Championships, Europe Triathlon kept their word to announce date and location for the 2024 European Multisport Championships a week later. They will be held on the 23rd of June in Coimbra, Portugal.
Last August World Triathlon announced that the long-distance triathlon world championships will be held as a PTO race series with races all around the world, including continental championships on each continent. For aquabike athletes it remained questionable if this is good or bad news since there was no mentioning of other multisport disciplines. Will we have continental aquabike championships on every continent? Maybe even more aquabike races at other events of the series? Or will there be no aquabike races included whatsoever?
It´s not a big surprise that the weekend of the Aquabike Standard Distance World Championships in Pontevedra brought some significant changes in the Aquabike.World Rankings. Despite both new world champions not having participated in any other aquabike race this year and therefore are not amongst the top ranked athletes, especially the men´s rankings have been mixed up quite a bit. What might be a bit more surprising though is, that the new leader in the women´s rankings did not participate in the World Championships.
The second edition of the Aquabike Standard Distance World Championships took place on September 24th in Pontevedra, Spain. For most athletes from the northern hemisphere, it was the last race of the season while it was the season opener for those who travelled to Galicia from South Africa, Australia or New Zealand. According to participating athletes we saw an almost perfectly organized race with only minor points of criticism. So everything was well prepared for a thrilling race.
We are less than one week away from the second Standard Distance Aquabike World Championships. While less than 200 aquabike athletes travelled to last year´s premiere in Abu Dhabi, this year´s edition in Pontevedra will see a twice as big field of competitors fighting for gold, silver and bronze medals. It´s not the first time aquabike world champions are crowned in the city in the north-west of Spain. In 2019 the third edition of the Long Distance Aquabike World Championships were held in the same location. So the local organizers do have some experience with organizing big multisport events and we can hope to see a well organized race. However, there is one point of criticism. If you have read my race previews and reports of the most recent major races in Spain it´s not hard to guess what it is about.
As expected, the European Championships brought quite some shifts in the top ranks of the Aquabike.World Ranking. If you compare the Men´s and the Women´s rankings, you will notice that they look very different. In this article we´ll take a closer look at the reasons for this.
The 5th European Aquabike Championships in Menen, Belgium brought out a favourite´s victory but also some surprises with quite a few strong Belgian athletes mixing up the top ranks. We had a beautiful, perfectly organized race in perfect weather conditions.
On August 27th the 5th European Aquabike Championships will take place in Menen, Belgium. We have the record number of 295 aquabike athletes on the startlist and can certainly look forward to an exciting race. The race organizers from Decospan Triatlon Menen did a great job, also putting quite some thoughts into how to serve not only triathletes but also aquabikers well. So, everything looks well prepared for a great day of racing through Flanders.
